Today, OpenAI launched its new “Study Mode” in ChatGPT, a feature designed not to give you the answers on a silver platter, but to guide you through the thinking process step by step.

With Study Mode turned on, ChatGPT shifts from being a quick answer service into an interactive tutor. Instead of handing over solutions, it nudges learners with questions, prompts for self-reflection, structured lessons, and quizzes. This prompts deeper engagement and exploration.

Built with educators, rollout to all users!

Study Mode was developed in collaboration with educational experts from over 40 institutions, ensuring Learning-focused design underpins its approach.

Starting July 29, 2025, it became available to all logged-in users (including Free, Plus, Pro, and Team accounts) with ChatGPT Edu users getting access in the coming weeks.

How it works: scaffolded learning, not shortcutting

Key elements of Study Mode include:

  • Scaffolded content flow: ChatGPT asks about your familiarity and goals before diving into the material .
  • Socratic questioning: The AI asks guiding questions before giving content, prompting you to think and answer.
  • Knowledge checks and quizzes: Timely pauses for reflection or quick tests to confirm understanding.
  • Structured, digestible lessons: Information is organized into clear, topic‑linked sections, rather than one big dump of text.

Optional; but designed to stick

Study Mode is opt‑in; you can toggle it on or off anytime. It remains completely optional, placing the responsibility on students to choose deeper learning over quick answers.

However, there is no parental or institutional control to enforce its use. OpenAI is currently considering such features in future updates.

OpenAI’s pivot toward Study Mode signals a strategic shift: from AI as homework shortcut to AI as learning companion. It addresses growing concerns in education that ChatGPT, with its speed and scalability, can enable academic shortcuts rather than real learning.

Critics note some limitations: because it’s powered by system instructions rather than a new model architecture, responses may still be inconsistent and errors still possible. In other words, Study Mode doesn’t eliminate hallucinations; it’s still built on the same foundational LLMs and data sets.

Sample session

Imagine asking: “Help me learn financial statement analysis.” Instead of a direct lecture, you’ll get guided prompts like:

  • “What’s your current level of familiarity with financial statements?”
  • “Are you studying this for an exam, a certification, or personal investing?”

From there, ChatGPT provides a concise overview of the income statement, then pauses to ask: “Can you explain the difference between revenue and net income in your own words?”

If you answer correctly, it proceeds to the balance sheets and cash flow. If you struggle, it gives targeted hints, real-world examples, and quick quizzes before moving forward. By the end, you’re not just reading explanations, you’re practising active recall.

Final thoughts

Study Mode isn’t a silver bullet. It doesn’t remove the risk of misunderstanding or the temptation to skip steps. But it’s a meaningful evolution: a digital tutor encouraging reflection, pacing, and active participation; all while letting students retain control.

If you’re using ChatGPT to study, write, research, or learn something new, flipping on Study Mode might help you turn prompts into knowledge, not just answers.
