Last week, Burton Borough School welcomed Lewis, our ML Developer and a passionate advocate for science and technology, to lead an engaging STEM workshop. Lewis’ visit was a significant opportunity for the students to explore the fascinating world of data, artificial intelligence (AI), and machine learning (ML). The workshop commenced with Lewis shedding light on the data sector’s pivotal role in the broader technology landscape. He discussed various career opportunities within this sector, with a particular focus on the role of a data scientist. Students gained a clear understanding of how data scientists contribute to the tech world by extracting valuable insights from vast datasets. Lewis also introduced a historical touch, mentioning the Turing test—a concept developed by British mathematician Alan Turing. The test challenges whether a computer can engage in text-based conversation convincingly enough to be mistaken for a human. This concept prompted intriguing discussions on the nature of intelligence and the capabilities of AI.
