Last week, Burton Borough School welcomed Lewis, our ML Developer and a passionate advocate for science and technology, to lead an engaging STEM workshop. Lewis’ visit was a significant opportunity for the students to explore the fascinating world of data, artificial intelligence (AI), and machine learning (ML). With interactive discussions and thought-provoking insights, we believe Lewis left a lasting impression on the budding minds at the school.
Exploring the Data Sector
The workshop commenced with Lewis shedding light on the data sector’s pivotal role in the broader technology landscape. He discussed various career opportunities within this sector, with a particular focus on the role of a data scientist. Students gained a clear understanding of how data scientists contribute to the tech world by extracting valuable insights from vast datasets. Lewis also introduced a historical touch, mentioning the Turing test—a concept developed by British mathematician Alan Turing. The test challenges whether a computer can engage in text-based conversation convincingly enough to be mistaken for a human. This concept prompted intriguing discussions on the nature of intelligence and the capabilities of AI.
Unpacking Data Science Responsibilities
Lewis didn’t stop at an overview of the data sector; he delved deeper into the responsibilities of data scientists. Students learned about the critical tasks these professionals undertake, such as data analysis, predictive modeling, and algorithm design. Understanding the practical applications of data science across various industries, from healthcare to finance, opened up exciting career possibilities for the young learners.
The World of AI and ML
Lewis then introduced the students to the worlds (yes, multiple) of Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence. He explained how these cutting-edge technologies are reshaping our lives, making self-driving cars, recommendation systems, and natural language processing possible. Real-world examples like deep fake software and chatbots like ChatGPT were discussed by the students, sparking lively conversations and sharing the far-reaching impact of AI and ML in today’s society.
The Concept of Reinforcement Learning
The workshop reached another level of excitement when Lewis introduced the idea of reinforcement learning. This concept, central to the development of AI systems, demonstrated how machines can learn and improve their actions based on feedback from their environment. The students were fascinated by the potential applications of reinforcement learning in areas like robotics and gaming.
AI and Human Learning Patterns
As the workshop neared the end, Lewis drew a parallel between AI and human learning patterns. He emphasized how AI systems, like humans, learn from data, adapt to changing circumstances, and continuously improve their performance. This insight sparked curiosity about the future of AI and its potential to collaborate with humans.
Q&A Session
The workshop concluded with an engaging Q&A session, where students had the chance to seek clarification by having free reign to ask questions while delving deeper into the topics discussed. Lewis’s ability to connect with the students and answer their questions demonstrated his dedication to fostering the next generation of tech-savvy innovators!
Lewis’s STEM workshop at Burton Borough School was an enriching experience for both students and Purple Frog Systems. It helped ignite a passion for technology, expand horizons, and encourage critical thinking among the students. As we look to the future, it is clear that workshops like these play a vital role in preparing our youth for the ever-evolving world of technology and innovation. Purple Frog extends our heartfelt gratitude to Lewis for sharing his expertise and inspiring the tech leaders of tomorrow.
