What’s new in 2026?

In 2025, the UK government announced a £187m TechFirst programme to expand digital and AI skills pathways, alongside a government-industry partnership aiming to train 7.5 million UK workers in AI skills by 2030. TechYouth

Reaches 1 million students over three years across every UK secondary school.
Offers access to AI and digital skills training, career guidance, and a new online learning platform.

£18 million

TechLocal

Provides seed funding to help small businesses and regional innovators develop or adopt new technologies, especially AI.
Applications judged by regional panels of tech business leaders, with oversight from Innovate UK.
Inspired by recommendations from The Tech Tonic (2023), such as:
Digital audit vouchers to assess and enhance tech usage.
Innovation grants for cross-sectoral product development.

£96.8 million

TechGrad

Provides 1,000 undergraduate scholarships per year in areas like AI, cybersecurity, and computer science.
Funds 100 MSc places and 100 elite AI scholarships. Currently open for online applications.

£48.4 million

TechExpert

Offers up to £10,000 in additional funding for 500 domestic PhD students working on tech research.
Strengthens the UK’s innovation pipeline and supports emerging talent in strategic tech sectors.
