Fabric IQ lives inside Microsoft Fabric and acts as the data foundation of the stack. It unifies data across OneLake and organises it according to the language of your business, exposing it to analytics, AI agents, and applications with consistent semantic meaning.

The core concept here is the Ontology, a model of your business entities, relationships, and rules (think: Customer → Order → Product → Supplier) that sits on top of your raw data. Built on Azure AI Search within Microsoft Foundry, Foundry IQ focuses on enterprise knowledge: documents, policies, manuals, FAQs, contracts, wikis, and other unstructured information that doesn’t live neatly in a database.

It uses agentic retrieval to search across SharePoint, OneLake, blob storage, and other sources, respecting permissions at every step. This is what makes AI agents context-aware and reliable. Work IQ: The people and workflow layer
